They make major movies with big directors and get fat contracts and limousines. They have legions of fans who write them letters, buy them drinks, follow them home. Their films are often major hits, and the bigger the hit, the more money they make, and the more money they make, the more like stars they become. The cover artwork for brat, Charli XCX’s sixth studio album on Atlantic Records.

I heard his voice in my answering machine, and quickly picked up, naively hoping he was calling to forgive me. At one round table in the middle of the room sat a group of boys who seemed to exude a magnetic force. As the boys toasted each other and chugged their beers, the prettiest of the girls would find some excuse to walk by the table, and they would eye the boys as languorously as they possibly could, hoping for an invitation to join them.

She’s been vocal about the struggles with sudden meteoric fame, and she’s not afraid to speak up about toxic behavior in the music industry. She should be able to take breaks, and rest, and be scared if she needs to be. The backlash from people was surprising, and a lot of it comes down to the commodification of artists.

She then dropped the album's lead single, "Von Dutch," and has since followed the track up with a remix featuring Addison Rae and her frequent collaborator/producer A.G. From the interviews surrounding the cover art, it’s evident that Charli XCX wants to step back from the fakery of the music scene and present a more genuine image. The right typography for an album cover created to inspire debate. Low-res, blurred, and distorted, the Brat type doesn’t seem to be an exercise in skilled, precise typography. However, like the puke green color of the album cover, appearances can be deceptive.

As it caught on, Charli’s team rushed to create a "[brat generator](https://bratgenerator.cloud/)" for fans to more easily make their own art inspired by the cover. When a [black brat generator](https://bratgenerator.cloud/) wall mural in Brooklyn announced the deluxe set’s release one painted letter at a time, Charli livestreamed it. As her marketing and digital guru, Terry O’Connor, puts it, a "big focus" of the campaign was about "making and creating real-life, in-person moments" that can then be captured digitally, like the phenomenon of fans posting selfies in front of the wall. In hindsight, this may be one of the most famous examples of social media being confused with the real world. Charli later said that she did support Harris but implied that she didn’t think that hard about the tweet.

To Heyer, "brat is everything." The brat ethos, as she describes it, involves elements of partying, authenticity and community. TikTok creator Kelley Heyer, a longtime Charli XCX fan, created a dance routine to "Apple" that quickly went viral among the singer's fan base.
